This tsunami was so devastating because most of the countries that were hit never had experienced a tsunami before. Most people in Sri Lanka at that time never even knew the concept of a tsunami. We only knew of a story about a tsunami that hit this country over 2000 years ago. But that's it. The schools didn't teach us; there were no warning systems in place; people didn't even recognize what it was as they probably thought it was just an unusual tide.

It reminds me of the video of people living normally in peace in the town near Tchernobyl after the explosion, because nobody had told them they had to move

you think this is fast, just wait until an asteroid hits. hopefully, you feel a little twinge and completely vaporize within 3-5 seconds. that's not bad.

In many cases all that stood were the palm trees. If you watch hurricane videos too, the wind is destroying everything, but the palm trees are absolutely resilient.

Savannah Brothers · August 12, 2018 at 4:20 pm

This is my worst nightmare because when I was a baby my parents took me, my brother, and my sister to Florida and our fifth day there there were sirens going off. Tsunami sirens meaning we needed to evacuate or get to a large building or hill. Maybe even a mountain immediately. When the tsunami came we were on our way out of state and behind us was s lot of water on the roads flooding. Luckily we got out in time. Ever since then I never go to the beach anymore.

StormLaker1975 · August 12, 2018 at 4:20 pm

Probably one of the most documented Tsunamis in recorded history as well.
