Meningococcal disease can be very serious – as many as 10 to 15 percent of people infected with this meningococcus bacteria could die, because it can lead to bacterial meningitis (infection of the lining covering the brain and spinal cord). On the other hand, some people carry the bacteria without suffering symptoms. It can spread easily among people in close quarters, explains Maria Monge, MD, in this video, like college dormitories.
